i'm in vienna, austria already, and vienna is absolutely wonderful. they still use a funny keyboard here though (but not as funny as hungary). the weather's been marvellous! it's quite cooling and very much agreeable.
talking about fresh things, we saw a high speed police chase unravelling along the busy streets on budapest this morning before we left for austria. the heavy morning traffic screeched to a halt, allowing the motorcade of motorcycles, cars n suvs zoom down one of the busiest of streets in central budapest. and we could see the police donning those black 'bank robber' masks in the cars. really cool. never thought i could see something like that in real life :P
then on the train on my way to austria, we had went past a wind farm! and it was really very surreal! i've only seen the wind farms on pictures and not a real one, so up close. there were jsut rows n rows of wind turbines for about half a minute, with the train whizzing away at top speed.
i suppose the highlight of the night would b going to THE viennese opera. it compeletely rocked my socks i tell u. absolutely wonderful. and best of all, i had to dress up n thought i looked rather silly! EVERYONE was decked in their finest, i could barely manage. i was watching this 5 act opera by verdi (see here) and it was really very very good. the orchestra was fantastic, and the singers were marvellous, though occasionally not being able to reach the high notes. u could really hear the difference with the relativelz inferior hungarian state opera. m really very very happy to have caught it.
the opera's really much more than just another concert; it's really more like a socializing affair. it's really qutie an eye opener for me to see how all the rich pple rush out of the theatre without delay once the curtain had fallen for the interval to stuff themselves silly with caviar n champagne (and some with fine cigar/rettes). and they would occupy all the gorgeous oppulent nooks n crannies in the theatre (all 3 - 5 levels of it) and chatter away, laughing and being merry.
more exhiliratingly, the euro's being held in austria nowadays, and there was a match in vienna just now - austria vs poland! and the atmosphere and mood was really explosive. they've got giant screeens and a huge carnical at their cityhall for the fans all over the world to party at. really really very happening. n infectiously so.
n we had one of the bestest and most famous chocolate cakes in vienna and this part of the world at cafe sacher just now! the ORIGINAL sachertorta from the sacher cafe is the granddaddy of all sachertorta served at all the cafes in this part of the world (n beyond). well, it's a different kind of chocolate cake, not very similar to the ones we're used to. but yes, it's nice and we like it nonetheless. haha. i fear i may get very fat from eating all the wonderful (chocolate) cakes at all the different characteristic cafes in vienna! the viennese also love their coffee melange and i think i' acquiring a taste for it.
